China in de 9de eeuw. Nie Yinniang, de tienjarige dochter van een generaal, wordt ontvoerd door een non die haar inwijdt in de wereld van de martial arts. Nie Yinniang wordt omgevormd tot een uitzonderlijke huurmoordenaar die wrede en corrupte lokale gouverneurs uitschakelt. Op een dag faalt ze in haar opdracht en wordt ze door haar meesteres teruggestuurd naar haar geboortestreek, met de opdracht om de man te doden aan wie ze was beloofd - een neef die nu de grootste militaire regio in Noord-China leidt. Na 13 jaar ballingschap moet de jonge vrouw de confrontatie aangaan met haar ouders, haar herinneringen en haar lang onderdrukte gevoelens. Nie Yinniang, die de bevelen van haar meesteres slaafs opvolgt, zal nu moeten kiezen: de man van wie ze houdt opofferen of voorgoed breken met het heilige pad der rechtvaardige moordenaars.
