As software DVD players go, I've always sworn by Cyberlink's PowerDVD. I’ve had a copy on my system ever since I bought my first DVD-ROM drive, and I’d consider it one of the staple pieces of software going. I’m used to the user interface and its foibles, so unless Cyberlink do something really silly with it, I won’t be changing my software DVD player anytime soon – unless it’s to a newer version of PowerDVD. 

PowerDVD 6 Deluxe is an excellent software DVD player which provides a host of playback options, a top-notch picture and a user-friendly interface. It comes thoroughly recommended for new users, while those upgrading from version 5 will be impressed by the number of added features, particularly on the audio front.
