Billy Joel werd geboren in The Bronx, New York. Nadat hij zijn examens op highschool had verprutst besloot hij zich volledig aan de muziek te wijden. Eerst in bands en later solo maakte hij indruk in New York en omgeving. 

Met The Stranger maakte de Amerikaanse singer-songwriter Billy Joel in 1977 de definitieve stap naar het miljoenen publiek. Mede door het succes van de twee grote hits 'Just The Way You Are' en 'She's Always A Woman'.
