Because she comes from wealth, Cornelia Robertson struggles with her position of power among the hospital staff, as Edwards learns the hospital does not treat black people. He then creates a makeshift clinic in the hospital's basement to treat those turned away. Barrow has difficulties making the hospital more presentable and must cut costs, which causes an electrical short that sets a patient on fire and electrocutes a nurse. However, it is revealed that Barrow is pocketing hospital funds to try and pay on a loan to a mobster. Meanwhile, Thackery demands cadavers for experiments, and Drs. Chickering and Gallinger break into a library to study some of Edwards' French medical journals.
