Mother Goose and the traditional sampler, two our most beloved artifacts of bygone days, have much in common: Both employed rhymes to reveal their wisdom and both began their rise in popularity at about the same time. Additionally, each had long and colorful histories before finally settling comfortably into the laps of children, whose loving embrace of Mother Goose's nonsense and wisdom helped create for the verses a prominent niche in our literary' heritage. And youthful hands helped transform the sampler from a schoolroom exercise into a unique and expressive art form.
Examplars__
Mention samplers today and many people think only of cross-stitch. Long ago, however, samplers or "examplars," as they were once known, displayed a variety of stitches, designs, and color combinations. Before there were printed patterns, women shared and exchanged needlework ideas, quickly copying swatches of new work before they could be forgotten. A strip of linen was reserved as a "notebook" on which designs were placed haphazardly until the cloth was filled. These samplers were highly valued, and handed down through generations. As printed pattern books became common, ihe practical record-keeping sampler fell into disuse. Thereafter, only the children who still required practice, stitched designs and letters on samplers.
