Post Description

The older brother of Irish folk-pop singer-songwriter Luka Bloom (Barry Moore), Christy Moore is one of contemporary Irish music's best singer-songwriters. The former lead vocalist and chief songwriter of Planxty and Moving Hearts, Moore helped to bring the musical traditions of Ireland up to modern standards. As a solo singer-songwriter, Moore has continued to add elements of rock and popular music to his well-crafted, tradition-based tunes and has been a major inspiration to such modern Irish artists as U2, Sinead O'Connor and the Pogues.

Christy Moore's first album, though issued on a large label (Mercury), is quite a rarity, with only 500 pressed when it was issued in 1969. It's in a more dated Irish folk style than the approach for which he'd become more renowned, offering lilting and jaunty tunes about romance and courting, as well as more serious stuff about the IRA and Irish political and labor struggles, albeit delivered in a rousing vocal manner. Moore has since said that he was unhappy with the accompaniment by four other musicians (on guitar, bass, banjo, and flute), feeling that these Englishmen didn't have the right feel for the Irish material. It's true that these have a slight pop-folk flavor that's a little innocuous and outmoded, particularly in the use of the flute, though these don't seriously interfere with Moore's strengths as a singer (or, taken another way, really lift the album above the level of an average Irish folk effort). Noted songwriter Dominic Behan produced the LP and penned a number of the songs, including the most politically oriented ones, "The Belfast Brigade" and "The Strike Weapon."
