Tijdens een theatervoorstelling worden schoten gelost, waarna een paniektoestand ontstaat. Richard Hannay wordt buiten het theater aangesproken door een vreemde dame, die hem vertelt dat ze een Britse spion is. Niet veel later wordt ze vermoord en is Hannay hoofdverdachte. Hij vlucht de Schotse Hooglanden in, achterna gezeten door zowel de politie als de trawanten van een internationaal spionagenetwerk. Zijn bewegingen worden ernstig beperkt doordat hij is vastgeketend aan de knappe blonde Pamela, die denkt dat hij de moordenaar is.
