Damn, it's not often recordings appear out of the blue and are genuine surprises,
but this recording surfacing 27 years after the show took place is a real shocker.
Prince's appearance as one of the opening acts for the Rolling Stones in LA was/is
a much talked about, wish-you-were-there moment simply due to the apparent abuse
he received - well now you can be in amongst it....sort of. The recording is very
much of it's time and hasn't aged gracefully at all. It is very harsh with a
constant shrill distortion throughout, and one certainly gets the impression from
the recording that it has been taped in the middle of a large crowd with noise all
around. Add to that a few drop-outs during the show, a number of comments from the
person recording and his female friend (who evidently doesn't want to watch Prince)
and the recording ending prematurely, and you may think this is unappealing rubbish
- but it's not. It's fascinating, very insightful, and really very funny in parts.
The recording begins during 'Bambi' and it's obvious from the start that the falsetto
will not be making an appearance for the Rolling Stones crowd - Prince only lapses
into using it during the last two lines of 'Bambi', with the remainder of the 18
minute set sung in a lower register - very macho. A basic run-through of 'Bambi' and
'When You Were Mine' follows each getting a decent, but unenthusiastic reception from
the crowd. Alas Prince's "fuck you" attitude kicks-in and the choice of performing
'Jack U Off' (incomplete and missing the 1st verse) is hilariously met with a tidal
wave of booing from the crowd, along with the person recording commenting on the
amount of trash building up (on stage?). Not to be outdone an instrumental 'Uptown'
follows with Prince seemingly playing the guitar Rock God and again, throughout the
crowd appear to be uninterested and boo him on occasion. The closing 'Why You Wanna
Treat Me So Bad?' begins with some guitar which is suspiciously similar to 'Start Me
Up' before the band launch into the song proper, however it's cut short after 2
minutes as the person recording gives up as his female friend shouts one final
"boo" and the recording ends. In terms of the recording quality, this simply will
not appeal to anyone, however from a fan's perspective, and a collector's perspective,
it's a thoroughly fascinating piece of Prince's live history and I am eternally
grateful that it has surfaced no matter the quality.
