Jae Kyung (Yoon Kye Sang) had no idea what he was getting into when he became a prison guard. Iron-fisted guard Jong Ho (Cho Jae Hyun) takes the naive young rookie under his wings, and teaches him how to keep the inmates in check in this tough world. While other guards have softer stances, Jong Ho regards his prisoners with open loathing, and as time passes Jae Kyung hardens his heart as well. When the government decides to resume capital punishment, Jong Ho and Jae Kyung are among the guards selected for execution duty. Though Korea has a capital punishment system on the books, in practice the country has not implemented the death penalty since 1997. Director Choi Jin Ho's debut feature The Executioner supposes the resumption of the death penalty with a compelling prison drama revolving around the country's first execution in over a decade. While films like Maundy Thursday, Breath, and My Father have touched on the experiences of death row prisoners, The Executioner steps into the shoes of the prison guards to look at the penitentiary process and psychological toll of capital punishment. Cho Jae Hyun (Bad Guy) delivers another tough-as-nails performance as an unsympathetic prison guard, while Yoon Kye Sang (Beastie Boys) plays the younger colleague unsure of where he stands in the system.
