Audience recordings of this quality are rather hard to find whatever year they are
from. Audience recordings of this quality from 1985 are pretty much non existent,
which makes this so special. The audience are almost inaudible for large parts of
the show, and when they can be heard they are unobtrusive and in the background.
The only small problem with the recording is that the sound can be a little muted
or wavy in parts, however it is minimal and certainly does not spoil your/my
enjoyment. The second half of 'Computer Blue' is also missing from the recording.
The concert itself contains a few rare and unusual moments. It opens with a laid
back, rather unique 5 minute version of 'Controversy' before the normal concert
opener 'Let's Go Crazy' begins. 'Take Me With U' contains the intro guitar line to
'When You Were Mine', however the song itself is not performed. Most unusually of
all though is the performance of 'Raspberry Beret' during the piano segment. It
lasts 2 verses and has Prince on the piano to the fore (with backing from Wendy)
and is certainly a highlight. The remainder of the show is straightforward enough,
however the performance of 'Purple Rain' is lacking the extended closing encore and
is one of the shorter versions from the tour. Again, I have to take issue with the
reported dating of this recording. Turn It Up / The Vault have this listed as the
5th March 1985 show, however the person who released the show is adamant it was
recorded on 3rd March 1985 - hence it being listing it as such. Certainly the best
of the 6 San Francisco Purple Rain recordings in circulation, and I'd find it hard
to find a better audience recording of the entire tour.
