John Coltrane (Hamlet (North Carolina), 23 september 1926 ? New York, 17 juli 1967) was een jazzsaxofonist. Hij geldt als één van de belangrijkste en invloedrijkste vernieuwers in de geschiedenis van het genre
Coltrane is misschien wel de meest bekende tenorsaxofonist. Bovendien was hij bandleider en componist. Hoewel hij aanvankelijk vooral Hard Bop speelde werd hij later een van de pioniers van de Free Jazz en Modal Jazz. Door de jaren heen is zijn bekendheid gestegen dankzij zijn fans, jong en oud.
